A technology that makes minute holes on various types of aluminum foil with a thickness of 10–50 µm.

This technology uses redox reactions to selectively etch specified areas to form cylindrical through-holes on aluminum foil. It also provides control over aperture size and ratio. We came up with the design of this prototype for signage using these aluminum foils with invisible holes. When the power is off, observers see an aluminum sign with simple graphics. When the power is turned on, an LED emits light from behind that passes through the holes in the foil to reveal a hidden graphic on the sign. Through this prototype signage we presented potential applications of the foil for displaying two different sets of information by switching the power on or off.
