Design for reducing droplets and preventing COVID-19 infection under circumstances of increased risk

This endoscopy mouthpiece incorporates a double-layered sponge with internal slits and comes with a drape shield to cover the patient’s face in order to reduce airborne droplets emitted by the patients and protect healthcare workers from infection. Amid the worldwide spread of COVID-19, the risk of droplet infection is higher from coughing triggered by endoscopy via the mouth. Therefore, we quickly developed a simple-structured mouthpiece that reduces droplets for hospitals. The fine-tuned design features include side adjusters on the mouthpiece to create space from the patient’s face and a shield for easier breathing.
